The Portal Story

| 04 December, 2011 00:21

The dream voice said “portals” and as I got out of bed, the image was very specific: “a round portal.”  “Great,” I said to myself, “what the hell is a portal?” I of course, had some sort of vague idea only to be educated further by doing an internet search letting me know that there were a lot of different types of portals out there – web links and software download portals, an actual physical door or imposing entrance, a couple of music videos/bands on YouTube, and I guess it is something you can use in the game “World of Warcraft.” The dream
image of a round portal really didn’t fit into any of these definitions. Whatever….I got dressed and left for work. The days came and went and there was no new information on the round portal – the dream voice was silent. So I prayed, asking for a sign, some validation, something. Hey Divine, please throw an inspirational crumb on my path. Something….

As I am driving to work the next day, commuting along, same drive, different day, I just happened to glance to my right and “holy crap” what do I see – a round portal. Quick u-turn and I pull into the driveway of a window company.  Apparently, the pile of wood framed glass windows were old showroom samples, stacked by the
entrance gate years ago. “Of course they are for sale,” says the helpful window guy. $10 each. I bought all 12 windows :). Proud owner of these new-to-me recycled windows that, even as I unload them into my garage, I am still unclear as to what I am supposed to do with all these “portals.”  One thing at a time, I guess. Life is a
process. My art is a process. Why should the “portals” be any different? The 12 “portal” windows are in the developmental stages of becoming the framework of multidimensional “stained glass.” In the meantime, I have incorporated the portal artwork into a variety of fab-u-lous pieces of art and jewelry. Choosing to live intuitively, I have to agree with James Joyce’s sentiment, “A (wo)man of genius makes no mistakes; his/(her) errors are volitional and are the portals of discovery.”

I have found a tremendous sense of healing, growth, and personal transformation through expressive, creative healing via different forms of art therapy – journal writing and visualization, sewing and quilting, creating
sculptural pieces from natural and reclaimed goodies, beading and jewelry making, fusing paper and fabric, and intuitive painting on canvas and on paper. My art is a process  enhanced with the spirit of spontaneity – a learning, exploratory journey involving materials, intention and self. I collect feathers, rocks, images, and found objects to be placed in my pour trays of splattered ink-soaked mulberry paper.

My approach to this art seems to be an exercise in patience, from waiting for the ink to dry on the paper, to the literal "drawing" out of the images. Each piece provides focus for my meditation during the creative process and something thought provoking to view upon completion. Yes, completion. “Deliverable end product.” The intuitive art works in the Portal series are created from mixed media - ink, colored pencil and collage on mulberry paper. The Portal series artwork may found in framed triptychs, on canvas, as jewelry, as ChandaLehrs, and as the “stained glass” of reclaimed wood windows and doors.
